Star Trek Online

Postby JaceRidley » Mon Dec 28, 2009 2:25 pm

Okay, maybe I'm just missing it, but I did take a look around and I cannot find a thread regarding the impending release of Cryptic Studios MMO Star Trek Online. Have you all somehow missed this? Because if so, I would have to wonder exactly HOW you missed it....

So we'll start here.

What are your thoughts? Are you getting it? Have you heard anything about it?

As for me...

I already have it preordered, and with my pre-order gain the ability to use the NX registry prefix and the ability to be a Joined Trill(which will be my second character, already planned), as well as a few things I don't care too much about(A "Khaaaaaan!" emote and a Klingon Blood Wine Toast emote, access to the TOS era Uniforms, a ship item called an Automated Defense Battery, and a Multi-Spatial Personal Shield for my avatar). I actually cannot wait to the point I am intensely impatient about the beta release to get my feet wet and the February 2nd(or since I preordered, January 31st) start date.

The reason I bring all of it up is twofold.

First of all....I cannot think of a BETTER way(short of having the assets to actually hire actors) to illustrate a Fan Fic series set in Federation Current/Near Future timelines. The ships and graphics in general are downright gorgeous, everything is so pretty, and creating a stock pile of illustration images would be simple.

Second of all...The RolePlaying opportunities. Browsing the official forums, they're FULL of people recruiting for extremely large active roleplaying groups to "Flesh out" the universe of Star Trek Online with active Fleets. I was just thinking about this today when it occurred to me that so many people here love this aspect of Star Trek that I figured at least SOME of you would be getting this.

So what say you...

Unfortunately I own a mac and since there isn't a mac version or even a console based version I can't get it until they either port it to the mac or port it to say the Xbox 360. Either way... meh.

I'll probably try it eventually. I'm still "between jobs", so paying for my monthly Wowcrack account is already more than I can afford. Plus, I don't think I've heard anything positive about the company that is making STO. That basically they make crappy, short, plotless, shooters is generally what I have heard.

I'd get it if I had the money to pay a monthly fee. Sadly, I have not the latter so I cannot do the former.

Actually, that was the company that Originally was developing STO. Since then, it's passed hands to Cryptic Studios, which is the same company that produced the immensely popular City of Heroes/Villains, and now Champions Online. They do good work. I couldn't get into City of Heroes/Villains myself when I tried the demo but I know a LOT of people who played the game.

Every Review of the Beta I've read thus far has been positive as they work the kinks out, and as of January 12th(Yay! Just 2 more weeks!) I'll be able to give a first hand account myself. :)

No time alas, for so many fannish things. And may even need to take a hiatus here if things do not even out soon. (Don't panic yet, Michael. *L*)

I will be interested in knowing if it's worthwhile though. I await your review. *s*

Alot of people are hyped for this game. Keep trying, ONE won't be eventually. I signed up something like a year ago. lol

And yes, the preorder benefits vary depending on where you preorder from. Check out the list on the STO Wikipedia Article for a list of what you can get where.

A couple tidbits of New Information I've found out just today based on a closed beta review someone did:

  • Everyone Starts out with a "Light Cruiser" class of ship of either the Miranda, Centaur or Soyuz variety. From there, you choose to go Escort, Cruiser or Science vessel classes and 4 more tiers of ship are then yours to work through. Every class of ship we know as canon, with the exception of Excelsior, seems to be available. Intrepid, Sovereign, Galaxy, Constitution, Akira, etc. Plus many NEW names and designs, and even Riker's "Luna" class and Crusher's "Olympic" class ship are available at various tiers.
  • Ships are visually Customizable in at least 7 ways: Coloring(You can add "war paint" to your ship, giving it highlights or tones of a various color. You can't make your entire ship bright green though and spoil the realism thankfully.), Saucer style, Pylon style, Strut style, Nacelle style, Registry/Name, and Decals(Federation, Maquis and Vulcan appeared in the Beta, though the latter 2 had to be unlocked.) This makes it so you can fully customize how your ship looks while still retaining the Star Trek "Style" and traditions of design.
  • You play as the Captain, working your way up the chain of Command, as anyone who commands a Starship is addressed as Captain. When you start the game, you go through a series of quick promotions through the tutorial that bring you to at least Lieutenant and from there you can progress all the way to Admiral. This replaces the normal MMO Leveling system.
  • Your Bridge Officers are randomly rolled at first, however they can be altered and customized from Name to Appearance. You visit a tailor on a starbase and it literally allows you to totally remake your crew however you like. Apparently the editor is every bit as detailed as the Character creator you create your self with. All bridge officers have 2 abilities, one for Space Combat, one for Ground Combat and have access to learn others/more up to their level. This makes choosing your officers a tactics based decision both during space combat and on away teams as you want a balanced party.
  • Combat moves back and forth between ground combat, which is focused on run and gun, exploration and basic squad based commands, and space combat, which is far more strategic requiring you to reroute power and wear down shields through strategic positioning and knowing your systems. The demo footage I saw of the combat was actually quite impressive.
  • Your character is, as everything, customizable. Your career path determines what you do with it. Tactical, Engineering, Science. For those of you familiar with MMO structure, Tactical are the DPS guys, Engineers are the Tanks keeping you in the fight longer, and Science is support and healing. It's nice and clean and predictable and entirely well done from what they say.
  • Character progression and acquisiton: Every bad guy you vanquish and mission you complete and all that earns you Federation Merit points which are what you spend to get new Bridge Officers, new abilities and your next tier of ship once you reach the appropriate rank. This works in conjunction with the experience gain and the reviewer said it made him feel like he was constantly accomplishing something to the point he didn't even care what level he truly was because it didn't matter.
  • Lastly...the Klingons. After a short tutorial(they say about 2 hours worth of total play) and a decent understanding of the basics, you unlock the ability to create a Klingon faction character of either the Klingon, Naussican, Gorn, (and there were 2 or 3 more I can't recall) or you can do the same thing you can do in the Federation creator and make your own alien. Klingon gameplay is focused more on PVP(Player vs. Player) than PVE(Player vs. Environment) at the moment but they are looking to expand that into more stories as well.
  • On a final note related to the last one, The Federation and Klingon Empire are the only 2 factions currently available, but they will be updating the game as they go and intend to introduce more, including the Romulans and Cardassians and, potentially, the Borg(though I don't see that one working very well) and there is even the eventual possibility of Player run Ships where ALL of the crew are Players and not just the Captain like now.

That's all for now...more as I find out.

it would be cool if they would let game designers create scenarios or even design races like Amarillo Design Bureau allows for their Star Fleet Battles game ....

No need. You can make any alien you want in the character creator. No restrictions to Trek canon races. As for Scenarios, that's what the "Fleets" are for. Fleets are like guilds and will be RolePlaying in game for scenarios like that.
