Beginning in the early 2390s, the Starfleet Corps of Engineers championed a plan that called for modular ship designs, with components that could easily be switched out or replaced. Modular construction had been a part of Starfleet design philosophy for decades, but was greatly expanded after the Dominion War.

Heavy losses in remote sectors of space made it clear to Starfleet that the traditional procedures of returning to a starbase or massive shipyard for repairs or upgrades was not feasible during times of conflict or for ships on deep space missions. The modular design allows ship’s crews to be able to make more repairs in the field and enables salvaged components to be reused on a variety of ships. An added benefit of modular construction is that starships can be modified for specific missions or to accommodate crew needs.

One of the ships to be designed in this manner was the new Oslo class. The design is based on the Norway class from the 2370s, but the Oslo is constructed to allow it to exchange many components with its sister ships, the Akira and the Zephyr. Because the Oslo is a heavy escort that will often be on the frontlines of battle, this ease of repair and retrofitting makes it possible for engineering teams to use the components they have on hand to get the ship back in fighting condition quickly after a conflict, limiting the delays caused by returning to a friendly spacedock.

Improvements in the Oslo include an improved power transfer grid that is shielded from surges normally caused by overloads or damage to the ship’s plasma conduits. Bio-neural circuitry enhances computer performance, but the Oslo’s designers have improved upon the bio-neural gel packs in use since the 2370s by adding filters which shield the technology from infectious agents.

While Starfleet attempts to use diplomacy before taking aggressive action, ships such as the Oslo are designed to have strong defenses. The Oslo features rodinium-alloy hull plating and improved shield generators that can withstand phaser fire, torpedoes, disruptors and even plasma weapons. It retains the Norway class’s distinctive phaser array on the dorsal bow, and adds five Type XII phaser arrays and two torpedo launchers that can fire photon or quantum torpedoes. The Oslo can be retrofitted to carry plasma weapons, although they are not standard Starfleet issue on this class of starship.

The Oslo is favored by captains who prefer fast, maneuverable ships that can end a battle quickly. It does not have the armor plating and redundant shielding of starships designed for withstanding sustained attacks, but its state-of-the-art weaponry allows the Oslo to disable its foes with rapid-fire, hard-hitting assaults.

The Oslo has limited room on board for medical or scientific research facilities, and it will often work in concert with other ships that have improved sensor arrays and laboratories. Being able to coordinate with an engineering vessel will keep the Oslo fighting for longer than it could without such support, making it an ideal vessel for battle groups and fleet actions.

The Intrepid class proved its worth as a long-range vessel during U.S.S. Voyager's time in the Delta Quadrant. Voyager successfully completed a 70,000 light year journey with no access to Starfleet supplies or facilities. Its success made the Intrepid class the gold standard for deep space explorer ships.

Inspired by Voyager, the design teams at Utopia Planitia set out to update the Intrepid class with the latest in Starfleet technology and design theory. The Discovery class, along with her sister ships Intrepid and Cochrane, is more than capable of long exploration missions without Starfleet support or assistance, but is equally equipped as a fleet support or solo patrol vessel.

Designed primarily for exploration, the Discovery has expanded science facilities and laboratories, including increased space for science officers on the bridge. Its laboratories are designed to allow its crew to put experiments into stasis during emergencies, meaning that key data will not be lost in the event of an accident.

For maximized engine efficiency, the designers kept the variable-geometry pylons from the Intrepid class, improving them for seven percent less energy loss than other Starfleet vessels of similar size. The Discovery also features warp foils, which extend when the ship is in its warp configuration. The warp foils are designed to increase stability when the ship is a high warp or is using transwarp conduits. The SCE will be doing a long-term study of the warp foil's effectiveness on the Discovery before making a recommendation on whether more ship designs should incorporate the foils.


In combat, Discovery lacks the firepower of an escort, but has a technological advantage over all but the best-equipped foes. Its sensor arrays are state-of-the-art and can identify weaknesses in enemy ships, locate and track vessels or even detect some cloaked ships. Its advanced targeting system allows it to lock on to an enemy quickly, making it ideal for engaging small, agile targets. The targeting system is also ideal for subsystem targeting, allowing a Discovery to take out an opponent's shields or engines quickly. Its improved tractor beam can hold an enemy in place for a coordinated assault, and its advanced deflector array can be reconfigured to assist ally ships by transferring energy or boosting shield strength. The deflector array can even be used to dissipate a tractor beam that would snare another vessel.


Advanced technology standard to the Discovery class include holoemitters for photonic crew, improved navigational sensors, a reconfigured dilithium matrix chamber that allows the ship to use damaged crystals safely for short periods of time until suitable replacements can be acquired and an astrometrics laboratory.

"We've taken everything that worked with the Intrepid and improved it," said Commander Jacob Kurtz, lead designer of the Discovery class. "This is a ship that will be at the forefront of Starfleet explorations for years to come."

Excalibur Class Starship

During times of peace, the Excalibur class is well-suited for cargo or transport missions. Its massive holds make it invaluable to Starfleet, which uses the Excalibur class extensively to resupply planets, space stations and other starships. It has enough power to run industrial replicators non-stop, and is often the ship of choice for missions of mercy or rapid evacuations. Crews on Excalibur-class ships can convert cargo bays to temporary housing in a matter of hours, enabling the Excalibur to carry as many as 1,100 passengers in an emergency.

In combat, the Excalibur's Class VIII warp core is large enough to allow it to transfer power to damaged ships or extend its shields to protect an ally without impacting its own defenses or systems. Engineers on an Excalibur-class starship can reroute that power to boost its tractor beams, allowing it to grapple enemy ships that could easily break away from lesser vessels. It has enough crew to get damaged systems back online quickly, and can even transport repair crews to allied ships. And the Excalibur class's reinforced hull allows it to stay in a fight, even when faced with a coordinated enemy assault.

Klingon Vo'Quv Class

Increased engine efficiency allows the Vo'Quv to travel great distances before the dilithium crystals must be realigned, and the ship carries electronic countermeasures capable of hampering enemy sensors. The Vo'Quv has the energy necessary to use these countermeasures even when cloaked.

After a battle, two of the Vo'Quv's cargo bays can be converted to engineering stations to help a fleet prepare for the next fight. And while no Klingon ship is designed for comfort, the crew of a Vo'Quv enjoys some small luxuries unavailable to warriors on smaller ships, such as holodecks for battle training and stasis units that keep gagh and other live food fresh for extended periods of time.
