For all of you who may not have heard yet, STO will be going Free to Play sometime around the end of the year, it looks like.

While there will still be a paid model where you get certain benefits, the core of the game and all missions and such will be entirely free for the enjoyment of all Star Trek fans.

For those of you who like to do Photo Manipulations, STO can be one HELL of a source. The uniform textures look very good. You will also be able to create your own Ship and Space images.

Check out the info here: http://www.startrekonline.com/f2p

Thanks for the information, Mr. Maxwell. I haven't had the money to buy the game yet but it would be cool to check out what the awesomeness is about. (\gorn/) (\gorn/) (\gorn/)

While it does open the door for fans of all financial situations, most Free-to-Play games I have played become polluted with Bots and advertisement characters. They stop being fun, in my opinion.

Though I have never played ST:O or Warcraft or the like.

Well since World of Warcraft and STO aren't F2P yet, I don't think you need to worry about it.

However, I've played plenty of F2P MMOs and haven't had that problem.

Champions Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Global Agenda, Free Realms, etc. are all F2P MMOs and all quite enjoyable and I have had no issues with Bots or Advertisement Characters.

That said, the CORE of STO is very much a Single Player game in a highly inhabited universe. The story isn't about cooperative play. The story is made to be about YOUR ship and YOUR crew. You can solo almost the entire game if you want. The only exceptions being some Ground Combat missions, some group Space Combat missions and some Endgame content that there are always groups lined up for. It's not something you need to gather people for.

I miss being able to play. I bought a lifetime membership (which seems a bit of a waste if they're going to freeplay, unless members who paid previously get special privileges) so I wouldn't have to worry about a monthly subscription during my unemployment...and then my desktop computer screen stopped working.

The friend of mine that's fixing my desktop is throwing in a one-month membership as a sorry for not being able to ship it back as soon as he'd hoped. If I time it right, I'll be able to use it before the game goes FTP...

Yes, us lifetimers will get some special stuff. Like a monthly stipend of points to use on the cool extra stuff, among other benefits.

Wickedness! I'll have all kinds of things piled up for when I finally get to play next. Whenever that is...

Does anyone know what Free-to-Play means in Star Trek Online? Does Free-to-Play mean that game-play will be interrupted by advertising? Will viewscreens in the game feature advertising or game elements contain the logo of companies or advertising messages etc.? Or will features in the game be crippled so that you can't really have a favorable game experience without actually subscribing?

From what I've read, it'll be the same kind of crippling you have in the 10-day invite. You won't have as many inventory or bank slots, and you won't be able to access the Foundry or missions made in it, nor will you be able to access crew assignments (I think). Other than that, it's the full deal.

Oh, and you don't accrue time toward veteran rewards.

Personally, there's just enough to make a subscription worth it for me, but it's not so much that I'd recommend you do unless you really want to.

Well, the day has arrived. At last STO is free-to-play.
I've promised myself for so long that if I could ever afford it, I would be playing. At free to play it finally fits within my budget.
I'll put up my screen name and maybe even work toward an in game meet up.
Happy gaming~

Be sure to send me a friend request @J.H.Harris

If we get enough people together, we can form our own fleet!

I'm not sure what my screen name is. Is it the account name or my handle? I'm so confused.

It's your character's name @ your account name.

For example, my primary Federation character is Amy@J.H.Harris, and my primary Klingon is Kareth@J.H.Harris

For a friend request, you just need the @J.H.Harris part.
