A friend of mine hooked me up when I turned Captain with consoles and weapons to make my Galaxy class cruiser a beam boat. 3 forward phaser 1 quantum torp and 3 phaser Aft. 2 Phaser damage Tac consoles. A heal and an add shields science console. I'm still getting used to it but I am unsure if I like it. The price was right, so that's what I'm flying right now.

Any opinions on build outs for Cruisers at Mark VII and VIII.

For a beam boat, you definitely need a Prefire Chamber and a Directed Energy Distribution Manifold in your tactical slots. If you have room, add a Zero Point Quantum Chamber for your quantum torpedoes.

In your science slot, stick a Plasma Distribution Manifold. It'll work with the DEDM to improve your phasers.

Also, stick a couple of armors in your engineering slots. They will beef up your hull significantly.
