Captain Dawnter sat hunched over his cluttered desk, scarfing down a rather steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup while frantically reading the latest personnel reports. No matter how many times he sat down and focused on finishing his administrative tasks, Joshua always found himself distracted by miniscule objects of seemingly insignificance. Last week, he had his lounge chair positioned on the opposite end of the ready room; apparently its placement was far more important than the recent statistics of the evacuation drill.

It was difficult to focus with so many things happening at once. He had to run a starship, and it wasn’t easy work. Are the anti-matter injector ports acting up again? Is there a problem in an area with minimal communication opportunities? Paranoia often got the best of him; it was a flaw he usually keeps to himself. It’s quite ironic how a Starfleet counselor could succumb to such emotions, but Dawnter quite liked irony; it was the universe’s way of showing you it still has control.

But paranoia isn’t natural- no. It’s a reaction, a response to discomfort. If there was anything that made Joshua Dawnter uncomfortable, it would have to be “screwing around with time.”

“You don’t screw around with time,” he says. “Leave time alone.”

It’s reasonable… We were meant to occupy space, travel through space, and explore space, not its continuum counterpart. So being ordered to investigate a string of temporal anomalies wasn’t a stress-free environment for the Captain. Especially alongside some nasty characters that never seem to get along… with anybody.

But life was life, and he was obligated to screw with time. He tapped his combadge, [Bridge, when will we be arriving at the rendezvous coordinates?]

The officer at helm replied, [In roughly twelve minutes, sir.]

Joshua finished his soup faster than anticipated and rose from his padded chair, muscles stiff from remaining in the same position for so long. He promptly stepped onto the bridge, leaving the personnel reports on the ill-ordered desk.

“Lieutenant McCormack, have you adjusted shields to compensate for any stray chronitons? I don’t want our hull sent a thousand years back into the past, now,” he asked, teasing, taking a seat in the command chair.

(Tag Lieutenant McCormack. This means that I request that you reply to this individual post. If any other officers are on the bridge at the moment, feel free to speak up to the Captain. He will reply ;) )

Mike McCormack smirked and allowed himself a small chuckle.

"Come on, Skipper," he teased. "A trip to the past could be fun."

Captain Dawnter glanced back at Mike and he added, "Not to worry though, Skip. I've adjusted the shields according to Commander Kriegel's instruction. Assuming Adam did his math right, the temporal whats-its shouldn't give us any trouble."

Mike nervously drummed his fingers on his console. Truth be told, he wasn't worried about stray chronitons at all. That was Kriegel's department. It was this ill-conceived rendezvous he was concerned about - specifically, who they would be meeting. Klingons, Cardies or Romulans would be bad enough on their own. But the idea of hanging around all three, plus the Ferengi, made Mike more than a little anxious.

A sudden alert on his console grabbed Mike's attention.

"We're entering sensor range of the other ships now, Captain," he reported.

"i may not be 100% correct, math wasn't really my strong suit." Kriegel said with a slight smirk.

As usual everyone rolled their eyes knowing he only said it to get a reaction.

"Mine neither, Adam," Mike said.

"There's something weird about this, Captain," he added a moment later. "I'm only picking up three ships out there."

Joshua's eyebrows rose as his posture did, walking across the bridge to the Ops station. He hovered over the officer on duty and placed an extended arm on the corner of the panel, keeping him sturdy.

"Confirmed," he called back.

"The Ferengi have yet to arrive, sir," the officer called up, "The T'Vril, Rukat, and Gil'tok have all reported in."

"What's on long-range sensors, Lieutenant?"

He looked down and tapped his combadge again while he awaited a reply from McCormack, [Bridge to Commander Tam. Please run a full diagnostic on the deflector array... I want it in pristine condition when we enter the system...]

He trailed off, barely whispering, "If the Ferengi ever show up."

(Kahless, I think we somehow have the same mindset, because I was planning the same thing. There should be a Ferengi shuttlecraft approaching at high warp, can you contact it? I'll post its reply.)

Lieutenant Commander Gallen Tam was deep into his work when the intercom rang. I wonder if we really could sustain a gravimetric pulse inside the core to optimize crystal efficiency, he thought, tapping his combadge and listening to the captain's order. I'll have to study more of Kosinski's notes before I mention it to the captain.

[Tam to Bridge,] he responded. [Running diagnostics.] He set his padd down on the console facing the large warp core in the middle of Engineering. Checking his readings, he began a diagnostic of the Sovereign's deflector dish. A few seconds passed and the Joined Trill was rewarded with a green indicator light.

[Deflectors are running at 100% efficiency, Bridge.]
"All of Time and Space; everywhere and anywhere; every star that ever was. Where do you want to start?"

"Geronimo!"

"Aye Skipper, checking long-range sensors now...yeah, there's something out there. Looks like a Ferengi warp shuttle just coming into range. You want me to hail them?"

Dawnter turned and nodded.

Mike opened a channel and awaited the reply.

"Channel open, sir."

[Thanks, Gallen. We should be entering any moment now.]

A ridged, orange face popped onto the viewer.

"Ferengi vessel, this is Captain Joshua Dawnter. Where is your mother ship?"

"Hi hoo-mon, I am Arlat. I believe my ship will not be joining us this evening. It picked up trace elements of derinnocite, a very valuable metal, and decided not to investigate the anomalies. 'But I'm an explorer!'" he snorted, "I told them. I wanted to take scans of the disturbances. So I came alone."

Joshua closed his eyes and sighed, looking back at his tactical officer. "Well I'm glad you've come on behalf of your people."

Actually, it was kind of infuriating. Commodore Tlexl had worked so hard negotiating their convergence, and they were whisked away on a search for profit. Typical Ferengi.

"Please, allow us to give you passage. It's not safe to enter the system with the minimal shielding you currently wield."

He stammered on his reply, "Uh- Um s-ure. Th-th-thanks."

"My pleasure," he smiled and cued McCormack to end the link. "Lieutenant, have a security team escort our friend Arlat to the bridge. Kriegel, can you contact the Ferengi ship and notify them that he's safe; if they even care."

Mike tried and failed to hide a groan of disapproval at his Captain's order.

"Hold on a minute there, Skipper. Are you sure you want a nosy little Ferengi buddy walking around the bridge lookin' over our shoulders?"

"I know Ferengi aren't always the best guests... But Cap- sorry, Commodore Tlexl advised us to use extreme diplomacy. I don't think he'll do anything too dangerous with my security officer at hand," he playfully winked. "I'm sure we can give him the station at Science II, he can get his scans from there. Just lock all command functions."

Joshua cleared his throat and placed a balled fist to his lips. "Helm, set a course for the system. We should be getting a call anytime now."

"Alright then, you're the boss," Mike said. "I guess I can keep an eye on one Ferengi."

Mike keyed in his security overrides and locked the secondary science console out of all command systems, adding a few extra security measures just in case. Once he was confident the console could resist all but the most blatant tampering, he tapped his combadge and instructed a security team to bring Arlat to the bridge.

"I just hope we don't have to invite the Cardies or the Klingons on board," he said. "Then we'd have a real party."

I don't think they're too interested in talking face-to-face," he smirked, which eventually rose into a grin.

"We're receiving a transmission... Cardassians," the officer at ops called back.

"Main viewer," he pointed at the large wall and stood tall and proud. But it wasn't as he expected; a female. Of course, her skin was grey and her face lay ridden with scales and other Cardassian extremities, but the lines that usually run vertically from the brow into the hairline... Were positioned in the middle, diagonally cutting across her forehead. It didn't take long to see her pointed ears either.

"I'm Inaria Stilet, Federation Ambassador to the Cardassian Union and the Romulan Star Empire. I speak on both parties' behalf when I say we are ready to go underway."

Joshua had heard of the prestigious Ambassador Stilet, but never had he seen a photograph. He was unaware that she was assigned to this mission. Maybe Commodore Tlexl owed her a "thanks" as well.

"Hello, Ambassador. I'm Captain Dawnter of the Sovereign. Once we receive confirmation from the Klingons we will engage. The Ferengi won't be joining us this evening."

"As expec-"

Her sentence was interrupted by the flamboyant entrance of Arlat onto the bridge. He charged up next to Joshua, where there was a clear considerable height difference. "Nice to meet you, Captain! You too Ambassador!"

The orange man quieted down after receiving several awkward stares and a phaser pointed at his back.

The Ambassador tilted her head and furrowed her scaly brow, "I thought there were no Ferengi present."

"Just one," he sighed.

"Well I will contact the Gil'tok myself. It seems you have other matters to attend to."

The hum of the turbolift was barely a whisper as it made its way through the saucer of the U.S.S. Sovereign, giving Lieutenant Zaeryn Riojj time to think. She had been in the ops centre, double checking that the ships computer, communications and sensor systems were ready for the unpredictable effects of the temporal field they were going to investigate. Yes, she had gotten a report from the duty officer that everything had been checked, but she wanted to make sure herself.

The carriage slowed and came to a stop on deck one. Flicking a stray lock of hair from her smooth, high brow, she stepped onto the bridge, taking note of all the usual sounds and chatter as the crew prepared themselves. As she headed for her post, she noticed a Ferengi seated at the side. Having some first hand experience of the little trolls, she kept a wary eye on him as she descended the steps to the front of the deck.

Reaching ops, she tapped the Benzite ensign (Mejon, Majod, Mjort--something she could never remember) on the shoulder and he quickly stood up. As she slipped into the seat, she removed the dataport from the left side of her neck and attached it to the black surface of the console before she even touched a single control. The telemetry link was instant and gave her access to the main computer in a more instinctual way than the standard control interface. Once she was satisfied with all the systems she monitored and oversaw, she glanced over her shoulder at the command arena.

"All communication and computer systems have been set for the distortion field," she stated, then decided it better to add, "sir."

"Security and tactical systems are also good to go, Skipper," Mike said.

He looked over at Lieutenant Riojj and flashed her a quick smile.

"Good work there, Zaeryn," he said.

"Excellent work, crew."

He stopped in his tracks and oscillated his point of view around the dim room; watching as the fine group of officers managed their stations. He'd served with a handful of them before, but many had been reassigned since Tlexl's promotion. New faces were good, though. Change was good; especially for the better. He wouldn't trade his crew for the world.

[Commander Tam, fire up the warp core,] he commanded with a smirk the Trill couldn't see.

"Helm, set a course, Warp 7"

Through all the paranoia, the fear, the apprehensiveness, Joshua found the flare that brought him to Starfleet. He felt adventure, exploring the unknown. It didn't matter if he was a forensic psychologist, a counselor, a first officer, or a captain. The flame was still burning.

"Engage."
Whatever it is, it feels like it's staring at me through the glass of a two-sided mirror. Whatever it is, it's just sitting' there, laughing at me.
